529 / CHET Deduction Calculator for Connecticut (2026)
Enter your CHET contributions to see your 2026 Connecticut deduction, how earlier carryforward is used and what carries forward to future years.
How the CHET deduction works
- Connecticut lets you subtract CHET contributions: up to $5,000 a year (single, head of household or married filing separately) or $10,000 (joint or qualifying surviving spouse).
- The limit is overall, for all CHET accounts combined, not per child.
- Contributions over the limit carry forward for five tax years. Each year is still capped, and that year's contributions are used first.
- Rollovers in from another state's 529 or a Coverdell account don't count.
- The deduction can't reduce your Connecticut AGI below zero.
- North Carolina has no deduction for 529 contributions.

Frequently asked questions
What's the most I can deduct for CHET in 2026?
$5,000 if you file single, head of household or married filing separately in Connecticut, and $10,000 if you file jointly or as a qualifying surviving spouse.
I contributed $20,000 this year. What happens to the rest?
It carries forward for up to five years, deductible up to the yearly limit each year. With a $5,000 limit, $5,000 is deducted this year and the remaining $15,000 over the next three years, if you make no other contributions.
Is the limit per child?
No. It's one overall limit for all your CHET contributions.
Does a rollover from another state's 529 count?
No. Rollovers and transfers into CHET from another state's plan or a Coverdell account aren't deductible contributions.
Does this apply in North Carolina?
No. North Carolina repealed its 529 deduction for tax years starting in 2014.
