RMD Calculator: Required Minimum Distributions for 2026 and 2027
Enter your birth year and last year's December 31 balances to see your required minimum distribution, the IRS divisor and your deadline.
How this calculator works
- It finds your RMD starting age from your birth year: 73 for 1951 through 1958, 75 for 1960 or later, and 73 for 1959 under the IRS's proposed (not yet final) rule.
- It uses your age on your birthday in the tax year to look up the divisor in the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table.
- For each account, it divides last year's December 31 balance by that divisor.
It doesn't cover inherited IRAs, which use different tables and the 10-year rule, or the Table II case for a much younger spouse. For those, see IRS Publication 590-B, Appendix B. For the rules behind the numbers, read the RMD guide.
Frequently asked questions
Which balance do I use?
The account balance on December 31 of the year before the RMD year. For a 2026 RMD, use the December 31, 2025 balance.
Which age do I use?
The age you reach on your birthday in the RMD year, even if your birthday is late in the year.
Does this work for inherited IRAs?
No. Inherited accounts use the Single Life Expectancy table and, for many beneficiaries, the 10-year rule. See IRS Publication 590-B.
Can I take more than the RMD?
Yes. The RMD is a minimum. Extra withdrawals are generally taxable, and they don't count toward a later year's RMD.
Why is my custodian's number different?
Custodians may use adjustments, such as rollovers in transit, or Table II if your spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger. Ask the custodian how they figured it.
