How to calculate sales tax

  • Adding tax to a price: multiply the price by the rate. For example, $100 × 6.35% = $6.35 in CT tax, for a total of $106.35.
  • Backing tax out of a total: divide the total by (1 + rate). For example, $106.75 ÷ 1.0675 = $100.00 before Brunswick County's 6.75% tax, so the tax was $6.75.
  • Tax due for a filing period: multiply your taxable sales for the period by the rate. If your sales total already includes the tax you collected, back the tax out instead. Then file your return with DRS (Form OS-114) or NCDOR (Form E-500). Nontaxable sales go on the return too.
