The rules behind the numbers

  • A Trump account is a traditional IRA for a child (IRS Notice 2025-68). Contributions can start July 4, 2026.
  • Family and employer contributions together are limited to $5,000 a year for 2026 and 2027, then adjusted for inflation. Up to $2,500 a year of employer contributions is excluded from the employee's income.
  • The $1,000 Treasury pilot deposit (for eligible U.S. citizens born 2025 through 2028) and qualified general contributions from governments or charities don't count toward the $5,000.
  • Family contributions create basis; pilot, employer and qualified general contributions don't. Basis matters for taxes on later withdrawals or a Roth conversion.
  • During the growth period, money generally can't come out. From January 1 of the year the child turns 18, traditional IRA rules apply.

Read Trump accounts explained and, for after 18, the Roth conversion guide. To compare with a 529, see the CHET and 529 guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator predict what a Trump account will be worth?

No. It shows deposits at 0% and, if you enter one, at a rate you choose. It's an illustration of the math, not a forecast.

How much can be contributed to a Trump account?

Up to $5,000 a year combined from family, others and employers for 2026 and 2027, adjusted for inflation after that. The $1,000 Treasury pilot deposit and qualified general contributions don't count toward that limit.

When does the growth period end?

December 31 of the year before the child turns 18. From January 1 of the year they turn 18, regular traditional IRA rules apply.

What is basis in a Trump account?

Contributions from family and others are after-tax basis that isn't taxed again when it comes out. The pilot deposit, employer contributions and earnings have no basis.

Why is there a 0% line?

So you can see exactly how much was deposited, separate from any rate assumption.
