North Carolina Side Hustle Taxes: Gig Work, 1099 Income and Online Sales
Driving for Uber, delivering for DoorDash, freelancing or selling on Etsy in North Carolina? Here's how side income is taxed in 2026, how NC estimated payments work, and when you need to collect NC sales tax.
Serving Leland, Wilmington and all of North Carolina, remotely and by appointment.
Three taxes on side income
- Federal self-employment tax: 12.4% Social Security (on combined wages and self-employment earnings up to $184,500 in 2026) plus 2.9% Medicare, figured on 92.35% of your net profit. Half of it is deductible (IRS: self-employment tax; SSA 2026 fact sheet).
- Federal income tax at your regular bracket, after business expenses.
- North Carolina income tax at a flat 3.99% for 2026. NC starts from your federal adjusted gross income, so business expenses and the deductible half of self-employment tax lower your NC tax too (NCDOR: tax rate schedules).
A quick example
Say you net $10,000 from DoorDash or Etsy on top of a W-2 job that already uses up your NC standard deduction.
- Self-employment tax: $10,000 × 92.35% × 15.3% ≈ $1,413
- NC income tax: ($10,000 − $706, the deductible half) × 3.99% ≈ $371
- Federal income tax: depends on your bracket and deductions, so add it on top.
Rounded illustration only. Your numbers depend on your full return.
Paying as you go: NC-40 and withholding
- NC estimated tax: if the NC tax due on your return, after NC withholding and credits, is expected to be $1,000 or more, NCDOR expects estimated payments with Form NC-40 or online (NCDOR: estimated income tax).
- 2026 due dates (calendar year): April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You can skip the January payment if you file your D-400 by January 31 and pay the balance in full.
- Have a day job? Instead of NC-40 payments, you can ask for extra NC withholding on Form NC-4. Our NC paycheck calculator shows the effect.
- Federal estimates work the same way, with Form 1040-ES (IRS: estimated taxes).
Gig drivers and delivery
- Track every business mile. Our mileage deduction calculator uses the 2026 IRS rates and works in any state.
- Expect a 1099-NEC or 1099-K from each app, but report all of your income even if a form never arrives.
- Your phone, the business share of your data plan, insulated bags and parking (not tickets) are common deductions.
Online sellers: NC sales tax basics
- Selling on Etsy, eBay, Amazon or Poshmark: a marketplace facilitator that's engaged in business in NC collects and sends in the sales tax on sales through its platform, so you generally don't collect it on those sales (NCDOR: marketplace FAQ).
- Selling directly (your own website, in person, at markets or by invoice): if you're based in NC, register with NCDOR (no fee) and collect the state 4.75% rate plus the local rate where the sale is sourced, such as 7% total in New Hanover County or 6.75% in Brunswick (NCDOR: business registration; NCDOR: county rates).
- Out-of-state sellers must collect NC sales tax once their NC-sourced gross sales top $100,000 in the current or prior calendar year; the old 200-transaction test was repealed July 1, 2024 (NCDOR: Directive 24-1).
- Returns are filed on Form E-500, monthly or quarterly depending on how much tax you collect (NCDOR: guidance for newly registered taxpayers).
Local items people miss
- The county business personal property listing each January for business equipment (due January 31 in New Hanover and Brunswick). See our Wilmington and Leland guides.
- An assumed business name certificate if you sell under a brand name instead of your own name. See Starting a Business in NC.

Frequently asked questions
What is the North Carolina income tax rate for 2026?
A flat 3.99% of North Carolina taxable income for tax years beginning in 2026, set by Session Law 2023-134. It applies to side income the same way it applies to wages.
Do I have to make NC estimated tax payments on side income?
If the NC tax due on your return, after withholding and credits, is expected to be $1,000 or more, NCDOR expects quarterly estimated payments with Form NC-40. Raising your NC-4 withholding at a day job is another way to cover it.
When are North Carolina estimated taxes due for 2026?
For calendar-year filers: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You can skip the January payment if you file your 2026 D-400 by January 31, 2027 and pay the balance in full.
Do Etsy and eBay sellers in North Carolina collect sales tax?
On sales through a marketplace facilitator engaged in business in NC, the marketplace collects and sends in the sales tax. On direct sales, such as your own website or in-person sales, an NC-based seller registers with NCDOR and collects the state rate plus the local rate.
Does self-employment tax apply in North Carolina?
Yes. Self-employment tax is federal, so it applies the same in every state: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit (12.4% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base for 2026, plus 2.9% Medicare). North Carolina's 3.99% income tax is separate.
