Delivery apps let you earn with almost any car, often with lower age requirements than rideshare. The trade-off is lots of short trips, parking and stop-and-go miles. Each app below has its own section so you can read just the one you need.

DoorDash

  • 18 or older in most states (19 in some), with a valid U.S. driver's license, insurance, registration, a Social Security number and a background check.
  • Any car works. You can also dash by bike or scooter in some areas, but this guide is about cars.

How pay works

  • Each offer shows base pay plus promotions such as Peak Pay, challenges and boosts, plus the customer's tip. You keep 100% of tips.
  • Some markets offer a guaranteed active-hour rate instead of per-offer pay. Check what's available in your zone.
  • Look at the total pay against the total miles (to the restaurant and to the customer) before you accept.

Dasher Rewards

Dasher Rewards has three levels (Silver, Gold and Platinum), set by your Overall Dasher Rating. It combines your acceptance rate, completion rate, customer rating, on-time rate, quality rate and orders in the last 30 days, and you need 50+ deliveries to qualify. Higher levels get priority access to high-paying orders, Dash Now priority and VIP support. Select Gold and Platinum Dashers can pause offers from certain stores. Platinum Dashers earn a Platinum Pass for every 200 deliveries in a row at Platinum.

Tips for more per hour

  • Dash during lunch (about 11 to 2) and dinner (about 5 to 9) peaks, and on bad-weather days when orders spike.
  • Learn which restaurants have long waits and decline their low-pay offers.
  • Park legally and safely. A parking ticket isn't deductible and wipes out several orders.

Uber Eats

  • Sign up: 19 or older for car delivery, with a 2- or 4-door insured car, a license, an SSN and a screening. Uber's vehicle page says cars up to about 20 model years old may qualify for Eats.
  • Pay: offers show estimated earnings, with promotions by city and 100% of tips.
  • Rewards: check the Driver app for the program in your city. Delivery uses the same Driver app as rides, so drivers who qualify can switch between rides and delivery.
  • Tip: use the same app for rides and food to cut dead time between ride requests.

Instacart

  • Sign up: 18 or older and authorized to work in the U.S., with a reliable vehicle and a smartphone. You need to be able to lift up to 40 lb.
  • Pay: batch pay is shown upfront and based on travel distance, the number and weight of items and expected shopping time. Boosts, heavy-item pay and promotions are added, and you keep 100% of tips.
  • Time: shopping takes longer than food pickup. Count the full time from store arrival to drop-off, not just driving time.
  • Tip: big batches with heavy items pay more but are harder on your back and car suspension. A folding cart and sturdy bags help.

Amazon Flex

  • Sign up: 21 or older, with a 4-door sedan, SUV, van or pickup with a covered bed, a license, an SSN, insurance, a smartphone and a bank account.
  • Pay: you reserve blocks, and each block shows a fixed pay amount before you accept. It isn't hourly, so finishing early raises your hourly rate, and running long lowers it.
  • Car impact: package blocks can mean dozens of stops and heavy loads. Watch your brakes and tires.

Grubhub

  • Sign up: 18 or older (21 in some markets), with a license, an SSN and auto insurance for car delivery.
  • Pay: base pay depends on mileage, time, delivery type and your market, plus bonuses and missions. You keep 100% of tips.
  • Scheduled blocks: signing up for blocks can qualify you for a local minimum if you meet the criteria.

Running more than one delivery app

  • Many drivers run DoorDash and Uber Eats (or Grubhub) together to cut waiting time between orders.
  • Only stack orders you can deliver on time. Late food hurts ratings and tiers on every app.
  • Track pay by app for a few weeks, then keep the ones that pay best per hour in your area.

Frequently asked questions

Which delivery app pays the most in Connecticut?

It depends on your town, hours and car. Track your net pay per hour on each app for two to three weeks, then focus on the best one or two. The calculator helps you compare.

Do I need commercial insurance for food delivery?

Many personal policies exclude delivery for pay. Some apps provide limited coverage while you're on a delivery. Ask your insurer about a delivery or business-use endorsement.

Can I deduct the food I eat between deliveries?

Generally no. Local meals during a shift are personal expenses (IRS Publication 463).
