Lyft runs across Connecticut alongside Uber, and many drivers use both. Lyft has a higher minimum age in Connecticut and its own rewards and rental programs.
Sign-up and requirements in Connecticut
- Age: 25 or older in Connecticut.
- Car: 2014 or newer, 4 doors, 5–8 seats including the driver's. Not a taxi, a stretch limo or a salvage/rebuilt title, and no rentals except through Express Drive.
- Documents: a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, personal auto insurance and a profile photo.
- Screening: a driving history and criminal background check.
- Emblem: display the Lyft emblem in the lower passenger-side corner of the windshield while in driver mode, and remove it when you're off.
- Keep documents current: an expired document temporarily deactivates you. Update them in the Driver app under Account > Documents.
How Lyft pay works
- Ride offers show estimated earnings. Base ride earnings depend on time and distance, and bonuses depend on your city and the time.
- Bonuses and challenges (for example, completing a set number of rides in a period) show in the Driver app.
- You keep 100% of tips.
- The Lyft Direct debit card pays out instantly and earns gas cash back at higher Rewards tiers.
Lyft Rewards tiers
| Tier | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Silver | 24-hour phone support, gas cash back through Upside in some regions, 2% back on gas with Lyft Direct, 40% off Everlance mileage tracking, Goodyear service discounts, 25% off TurboTax federal products. |
| Gold | Everything in Silver, plus 3% gas cash back with Lyft Direct and 3 location filter uses a day. |
| Platinum | 7% gas cash back with Lyft Direct, 60% off Everlance, 3 free Allstate roadside assists every 90 days, 4 location filter uses a day. |
| Elite | 10% gas cash back with Lyft Direct, free Everlance, premium airport pickups, early access to scheduled rides, 6 location filter uses a day and Elite status protection. |
You earn 1–2 tier points for every $1 you earn on rides and tips (not bonuses) during each monthly period, and you also have to meet rating and stats goals. Check the Rewards tab for the current requirements in Connecticut.
Getting the most from your hours
- Use the mileage-tracking perk: the Everlance discount (free at Elite) gives you an automatic mileage log you'd want anyway.
- Use location filters to head toward home or a busy zone on paying rides instead of driving there empty.
- Gas cash back is real money: at 5–10% back on gas, Lyft Direct plus Upside can cut fuel costs, which are often a driver's biggest cash expense.
- Run Lyft with Uber to cut waiting time, but go offline on one as soon as you accept a ride on the other.
Renting through Express Drive
Express Drive is Lyft's rental program, run with partners such as Hertz, Avis and Flexdrive in select cities. Check the Driver app for Connecticut availability. Hertz advertises Express Drive rates from $219 a week before taxes and fees, plus a refundable deposit. Insurance, standard maintenance and roadside assistance are included.
- Rentals are 7 days at a minimum. Hertz requires a new contract every 28 days.
- To renew, you generally need 20–40 rides a week, depending on the region.
- Rent comes out of your earnings, including tips and bonuses, before you can cash out. If earnings fall short, Lyft charges your card.
- Lyft says renters' base ride earnings are lower, about 17% on average. Count that in your break-even.
Gig Driver Kit 2026, CT Edition ($19): a full guide to each app, plus an Excel mileage and expense log, a weekly earnings tracker, a rent-vs-own break-even calculator, a maintenance schedule and a printable checklist.
