Starting a Business in Danbury, CT
A plain-English checklist for launching a small business in Danbury, Connecticut: the statewide steps, plus Danbury's trade name, zoning and assessor offices. Checked November 3, 2026.
For general education only. Not tax, legal, insurance, or investment advice, and not a promise of any result. Tax rules and due dates change, so confirm with the IRS (irs.gov), the CT Department of Revenue Services (portal.ct.gov/DRS) or your town before you act, and ask your tax preparer about your own situation.
Statewide steps (same in every Connecticut town)
- Pick a structure. A sole proprietorship needs no state filing. An LLC is formed with the CT Secretary of the State ($120 Certificate of Organization) and then files an annual report ($80, between January 1 and March 31). Compare options in LLC vs. S corp and How to start an LLC in CT.
- Get an EIN from the IRS if you'll have employees, form an LLC with more than one member, or want one for banking (IRS: apply for an EIN). The IRS doesn't charge for it.
- Register with CT DRS in myconneCT if you'll sell taxable goods or services or have employees. A Sales and Use Tax Permit costs $100, and returns are due even for periods with no sales (CT DRS: register your business).
- Check state licenses. Some trades and occupations need a state license from the CT Department of Consumer Protection (CT DCP).
- Open a separate business bank account and set up bookkeeping from day one (IRS: recordkeeping).
- Plan for quarterly estimated taxes if you'll have self-employment income (IRS: estimated taxes). Our quarterly tax guide and tax deadlines page cover the dates.
Danbury-specific steps
Town offices change forms and fees. Use the official links below and call the office if anything is unclear.
1. Trade name (DBA) at the town clerk
Records trade names. The Town Clerk's page lists a $20 fee for each trade name filing and has the application forms (business organizations or natural persons) plus the addendum. Statewide, the Secretary of the State says a trade name is filed with the town clerk where the business is primarily transacted, for a $20 fee, on forms that are hand signed and notarized (new forms apply to filings on or after October 1, 2026).

2. Zoning and home-based businesses
Danbury's Zoning Regulations say a zoning permit is required for each home occupation and limit what a home occupation can be. Read the home-occupation section before you start working from home. Rules depend on your zone and what you'll do there (clients visiting, signs, employees, deliveries), so ask the zoning office before you start or sign a lease.

3. Business personal property declaration (assessor)
Danbury prefers that businesses file the personal property declaration through its online system. Under state law, businesses generally file a declaration of taxable personal property (furniture, equipment, supplies and similar) with the assessor each year by November 1, and a late or missing filing adds a 25% penalty.

4. Local business network
Chambers and business councils run networking events and can point you to local resources. Membership is optional.
